Candle Care Guide: Burn Longer, Burn Cleaner

NOU-ERE OMBRA concrete candle — close-up of the wooden wick and natural wax surface
Guide · Candle Care

A candle, if cared for poorly, gives only half its life; cared for well, it burns to the last drop, never smokes, and carries its scent until its final day. 6 simple rules.

1. Trim the Wick

It is the most often skipped step, yet the most important. Before every lighting, trim the wick to a length of 5–6 mm. A long wick = a high flame = soot + carbon build-up + rapid wax consumption. A thin pair of metal wick trimmers is ideal; a nail clipper will also do the job.

2. Take the First Burn Seriously (The Tunnelling Mistake)

The most critical choice you make when lighting a brand-new candle: let the entire surface melt. Soy wax builds a “memory” — if only the centre melts on the first burn, it will keep melting from the centre on every burn afterwards, and it will tunnel. The wax left clinging to the walls is never used again; your candle finishes at half its life.

The rule: On the first burn, let it burn for 2–3 hours, until the surface melts from edge to edge.

“The first 3 hours of a candle decide how the remaining 35 will go. Don't rush.”

3. Burn Away From Draughts

An open window, air conditioning, a fan, the rustle of a curtain, a door opened and closed often. Every time the flame sways, soot forms and the wick burns crooked. Position your candle in a calm spot, where no draught reaches it.

4. Do Not Burn More Than 4 Hours at a Time

When a candle burns continuously for more than 4 hours, the wax overheats; the wick builds up a coal deposit, forming the cap known as a “mushroom.” The result: the flame rises, soot bursts out, and the character of the scent is spoiled. At the end of 4 hours, snuff the candle out, trim the wick back to 5–6 mm, let it rest for half an hour, and then you can light it again.

5. Don't Blow It Out

Blowing splatters the hot wax, causes smoke and leaves the wick bent. Instead:

  • A candle lid / snuffer cap cuts off the oxygen to extinguish it (the cleanest method).
  • Or briefly dip the wick into the wax and lift it straight out (the “dip” method). The wick is both cleaned and leaves no smoke.

6. Keep It Covered in Storage

If you keep the lid closed between uses once the candle has burned, the scent molecules don't escape and it opens up like the first day. Don't expose it to sunlight; UV light spoils the colour of the wax and weakens the scent notes.

In Short

An elegant candle is a gift; proper care is the life of that gift. Each NOU-ERE candle, when these 6 steps are followed, reaches the burn time written on its label — sometimes a little beyond it.
