A reed diffuser is the quietest of room fragrances — it needs no flame, you never forget to switch it off, it is always active. But to keep it strong, you need to know a few rituals.
How Does It Work?
The fragrance oil inside the bottle rises through the rattan reeds; once it climbs beyond the length of the reed, it disperses into the air. That is why two variables matter: the number of reeds (intensity) and the size of the room (the area of diffusion).
First Placement
- Carefully remove the bottle's cap and plastic seal.
- Place all the reeds that come in the box into the bottle (usually 6–8). Use fewer and the scent stays weak.
- Wait 10–15 minutes; the reeds begin to dampen as they absorb the oil.
- To start it faster, flip the reeds once — let the wet end face up. Then turn them back to the normal position.
Where to Place It
The wrong placement either halves its life or never lets you sense the scent at all. Mind these rules:
- Somewhere with air movement: The entrance hall, a corridor, the threshold of the living room — points where the air moves. Circulation carries the scent.
- Not in direct sunlight: UV light weakens the essence and high temperatures evaporate the oil quickly.
- Away from delicate surfaces: Placed on lacquered furniture, fine wood or fabric, even a small oil seep can leave a stain. Set a coaster or a ceramic dish beneath it.
- Height: A little above knee level (on a table, a console, a chest of drawers) is optimal. Close to the floor, the scent cannot rise over the room.
Maintenance: Flip Every 2 Weeks
After a while the reeds gather dust at the top; this makes it harder for the oil to reach upward. Every two weeks, turn the reeds upside down from the bottom; let the wet end face up. This simple gesture revives the scent's intensity and gives that “freshly opened” feeling, like a candle.
Duration and Consumption
- 120 ml version: About 1 month; for a medium-sized room (~20 m²).
- 150 ml version: 1–2 months; for larger spaces or continuous use.
If you want an intense scent, increase the number of reeds; if you want it lighter, remove 2–3 reeds.
In Short
A reed diffuser does what a candle or a spray cannot: belonging to a space for 24 hours, with nothing to blow out, nothing to switch off. Placed correctly, you forget it entirely, yet it always greets you the same way when you walk in.
