What Should You Look for When Choosing a Candle?

NOU-ERE TORRO candle — embossed brand lettering on a glass surface, an emphasis on quality
Guide · Quality Handbook

A candle shapes the air of a space only for the few hours it burns — a cheap decision can carry a long aftermath. The 5 clear criteria that distinguish a quality, safe candle.

1. Raw Material

The first question is the simplest: what is inside this candle? Paraffin-based candles contain petroleum derivatives; they are controversial for health and not eco-friendly. Plant-based materials such as soy wax, beeswax or coconut wax, on the other hand, offer a cleaner burn, a longer life and a more sustainable use. At NOU-ERE we work only with 100% soy-based wax.

2. Wick Quality

The wick is the true engine of a candle. A poorly chosen wick means carbon build-up, soot and uneven melting. What to look for: a cotton or natural wood wick. What to avoid: industrial wicks with lead or zinc cores (long since banned in Europe, though some cheap producers still use them).

3. Scent Profile and Intended Use

Let the candle's scent be not only beautiful but also suited to where it sits. Woody-spicy for an inward-looking evening; citrus-fresh, a renewed breath, for a wide breakfast space; white flowers and musk for the bedroom — scent is a composition that supports a space, not a dominant accent. NOU-ERE's family of 10 signature scents was designed for exactly these different intentions.

“A candle may be selling fragrance a thousand times over — but which fragrance, and under what spell? That is the real question.”

4. Burn Time

Stating the burn time relative to weight on the label is a signature detail that sets a professional brand apart. In NOU-ERE candles: standard tin 35-40 hours, concrete 30-35 hours, small tin 12-15 hours. On the first lighting, waiting for the surface to melt completely (about 2-3 hours) is the basic condition for using 100% of that time.

5. Packaging and Design

The candle's vessel is the part that remains visible throughout its life. That is why the choice of material (concrete, glass, tin, jar), form and color is a decoration decision. A well-designed candle vessel takes on a second life after the candle is gone: a planter, a vase, a pen holder, a jewelry dish. NOU-ERE packaging too was built on exactly this philosophy — the purchase is a decision to own, not to consume.

In Short

Raw material + wick + scent + time + packaging. Five points, five promises. A brand that can list these five on its label is a maker, not just a seller. At NOU-ERE, this set of five always stands written behind every candle.
